What Is Extra-Corporeal Shockwave Therapy?
Extra-Corporeal Shockwave Therapy uses high-energy acoustic waves delivered directly to injured tissue. These controlled pulses trigger a biological response that improves circulation, supports tissue repair, and helps reduce chronic pain.
Originally developed to treat kidney stones, this technology is now widely used in orthopedic and sports medicine to treat chronic tendon, ligament, muscle, and bone conditions without surgery.

Giannin is so knowledgeable and my visit gave me a lot of insight about my bunion pain and also my Achilles that had bothered me in the past too. Highly recommend giving her a visit!Posted on Aryeh GamoranTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a great experience with Dr. Perez. Dr. Perez has a great personality that’s friendly, engaging and thoughtful. She remembers personal details which add to the personal touch that many physicians lack, especially within any specialty. I thought the absolute worse, that I had fungus or that my foot was going to fall off. Turns out it was eczema, but scared me for sure. She brought my mind to ease and actually prescribed the right thing on the first visit. Highly recommend.Posted on Eric VillegasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Yesterday was my first visit with Dr. Perez. I was impressed by her practice. Very chic, modern and clean. The technology she uses is above par. I was able to receive some test results immediately. The staff is warm and friendly and definitely conveyed empathy and assurance. This was refreshing. The Doctor took her time with the consultation. She was detailed in her explanation and thorough with her diagnosis and prognosis. She allowed for questions and provided detailed replies and options for treatment. At no time did I feel rushed. The doctor spoke with candor about my circumstances and didn't fill me with any false hope. I appreciated her direct approach on how I got to where I am currently. Even though some of the information shared was difficult to hear, I did leave with an optimistic outlook. I look forward to returning for our follow-up visit and the treatment proposed. Thank you Dr. Perez!Posted on Julie NamTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr. Perez is an excellent foot and ankle surgeon. I recently underwent an ankle arthroscopy with cement injection, PRP injection, and a bunionectomy. I am still healing, but I am extremely grateful that I chose her for this procedure. She is incredibly compassionate, accommodating, and truly detail‑oriented. She listens to her patients with genuine care and gives thoughtful, attentive explanations. Her office is immaculately clean and aesthetically beautiful, which adds to the overall positive experience. Natalia at the front desk is always so helpful and pleasant, making every visit smooth and stress-free. I am truly grateful to have found Dr. Perez.Posted on Jovelle De llamasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had an excellent experience at Flex Foot & Ankle. I broke my 5th metatarsal and needed surgery to properly align it, and from start to finish, everything went smoothly. Dr. Perez is truly amazing — she is not only highly skilled but also incredibly caring. She treats her patients like family and honestly felt like a mom to me throughout the process. She took the time to explain everything, made sure I was comfortable, and showed genuine concern for my recovery. The clinic itself is very clean and well-organized, and the staff are all kind, professional, and welcoming. The entire surgical process and follow-up care went very well, and I felt supported every step of the way. Thanks to Dr. Perez and her team, my recovery has been great and I’m now able to work properly again. I am so happy I chose this clinic and would highly recommend Flex Foot & Ankle to anyone needing foot or ankle care.Posted on Gwendolyn Van BurenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Shockwave Therapy FAQs
Have questions about Extra-Corporeal Shockwave Therapy?
Here are some of the most common questions patients have about ESWT, how it works, what to expect during treatment, and recovery.
How does ESWT work?
ESWT delivers shockwaves (either radial or focused) in the form of energy and have mechanical and cellular effects that improve tissue healing and alter your pain signaling. They create little holes (microcavitation) which improves blood flow creating pain relief and anti-inflammatories effects. It may also increase collagen synthesis as well as increase the number of cells within tendons and ligaments.
When you experience chronic pain, your body no longer recognizes that there is an injury to that area. As a result, it shuts down the healing process and you no longer feel relief. The ballistic sound waves of the EnPuls (ESWT) penetrate deep through your soft tissue, causing micro-trauma and restarting the inflammation process, triggering your body’s natural healing response again. The energy emitted also causes the cells in the soft tissue to release certain bio-chemicals that intensify the body’s natural healing process. These bio-chemicals allow for the building of new microscopic blood vessels in the soft tissue.
What do studies show?
There have been extensive studies done on Radial Shockwave Therapy over the past 20 years. These studies show an average 80% success rate.
How is RSWT performed?
The system is a machine with an applicator that looks like an ultrasound and is administered once a week for a series of 4 to 5 treatments.
Each treatment takes approximately 4-5 minutes depending on the size and number of areas treated.
Dr. Perez will place the applicator on the area and administers the ballistic waves by moving over the affected area in a very slow, circular motion.
During the treatment, there may be some minor discomfort. Painful areas are helpful in isolating the truly injured areas.
What are the possible side effects?
There have been very few side effects reported. In rare cases, skin bruising may occur. Patients may also feel soreness in the area for a day or two afterward, similar to a strenuous workout.
Will I be in pain afterward?
A day or two after the treatment you may feel a slight discomfort like a bruise, but that is normal and is a sign the treatment is working.
Why consider Radial Shockwave Therapy?
ESWT has a proven success rate that is equal to or greater than that of traditional treatment methods, including surgery. However, there are times when surgery is required and Dr. Perez will explain what is needed and when.
Patients treated with ESWT may be active immediately and resume their normal routine the same day. Many patients find a significant and immediate reduction in their pain. Some patients will feel results gradually after each treatment.
